How AI Will Reshape the Future of Time Tracking in Legal Practices

AI time tracking

It is undoubtedly true that the future of work will look different than it does today. We know for a fact that artificial intelligence (AI) is going to shape the way that virtually every industry operates. This is certainly the case in the legal profession, and we will see big changes to the way that legal professionals track their billable hours going forward. It is a good idea to look at some of the ways that artificial intelligence will reshape the legal profession in the coming years so that you know what to be on the lookout for in the years to come.

Automated Time Capture

One of the biggest concerns that attorneys have is how they can accurately measure their time and ensure that they are billing their clients accurately. After all, the attorney deserves to receive full compensation for all the hard work that they put in. Unfortunately, it can be a major challenge for a busy attorney to keep track of every minute and ensure that they are billing for that time properly. That is why automated time capture is so appealing to so many attorneys.

Artificial intelligence will allow attorneys to track their hours with ease. Instead of relying on manual inputs, these programs will make it possible to track one’s time with little human intervention. Instead, the AI programs will work hard in the background to measure the amount of time spent on various tasks and tabulate all of it for you. Know with certainty that you are billing your clients for the appropriate amount of time based on the actual hours of work put into their cases.

Predictive Analytics

If there is one thing that attorneys have a lot of, it is data. Mountains and mountains of data collected in the offices of every attorney in the country. This is good news for the AI future that we are headed towards. That is because AI programs will gladly gobble up that data and use predictive analytics to produce potential outcomes that attorneys can use to inform their decisions. But what are predictive analytics?

Harvard Business School explains:

Predictive analytics is the use of data to predict future trends and events. It uses historical data to forecast potential scenarios that can help drive strategic decisions.

These projections can be about near term or long-term events. The purpose is simply to provide the attorney with insights about the data that already exists in the world. In short, the artificial intelligence programs are best able to scrape the vast array of data quickly and in a more efficient way than any human being ever could. Thus, the AI program is able to do some of the heavy lifting for the attorney so that they can focus on the other aspects of winning their case.

Although the predictions produced by AI programs should not be taken unquestioningly, they are a good starting point for coming up with reasonable conclusions based on the information that already exists.

Natural Language Processing

Technology is becoming more advanced by the day, but there are still some stumbling blocks within the technologies that we do have that can get in the way of human progress. Notably, the inability for computers to understand human language has always been something that researchers and developers have tried to work on. Today, they are closer than ever to unlocking the full potential of various computer programs thanks to advancements in natural language processing.

The benefits of more effective natural language processing abilities include the following:

  • Easier to Input Data – When computer programs are advanced in their natural language processing abilities it will be easier for attorneys to enter the various pieces of data that they need to input into their systems. In turn, this will make it easier for attorneys to gather up the outputs from their programs and see what the data is truly telling them.
  • Time Savings – Anything that an attorney can do to save themselves time makes them more valuable to their clients. When their computer programs can understand human language at an advanced level it will help the attorney to enter more information into those programs more quickly. Thus, tedious work that used to take a long time can be simplified.
  • Smoother Communication – Sometimes there are pieces of information that are lost in translation between an attorney and the computer programs that they use. Likewise, certain pieces of information might not be easily translated to clients either. Fortunately, natural language processing makes it a little easier for the computers to understand what is going on.

With each passing year computers are being pushed to improve their natural language processing abilities. They will continue to get better and better, and the result will be a new generation of lawyers who are far more effective than ever before.

Real-Time Reporting and Insights

Attorneys can gather up a significant amount of information about how they spend their time when they have programs that are effective in tracking this information for them. That is why the latest wave of AI products are so exciting in the legal space. These products produce real-time reporting and insights that are second to none.

Real-time data about how one is spending their time makes it possible to see where improvements can be made. In fact, adjustments can be made instantly to provide better results for clients. After all, attorneys don’t have time to waste when they are trying to work on a variety of cases at the same time.
